The smallest of communities, tucked quietly into the corner of Lauterbrunnen Valley, surrounded almost entirely by steep ascents into the clouds above, where glaciers slowly melt and send their waters gushing over the cliffs. If this reminds you of something from the Lord of The Rings, that's because this place was Tolkien's inspiration for the elven city of Rivendell. He hiked through this valley and over the ridge in the early 1900s, and was obviously taken away with it's beauty. Stechelberg lies at the literal end of the road in the valley. Beyond lies a steep climb into the ceiling of the Swiss Alps and the World Heritage Jungfrau Glacier.
